Industry/Business Aquatic Stewardship Award
Mr. Kim Guinn, CEO of Essyx Design & Fabrication, Inc.
In 2012, BWP began working with Kim Guinn and his staff at Essyx towards designing, fabricating, and placing an impactful entrance to Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek: a boy in a tree reaching for playing dragonflies. They even included the kindergarten signature of the park’s namesake into the sign. In April 2013, their product was located with a nearby bench at the edge of the parking lot next to 1214 King Springs Road. The entrance now attracts visitors and immediately educates the curious about the inspiration and purpose of the environmental education park.
The following year, we began a new venture with the remaining TDA 319 grant funding for three more interactive signs to teach visitors about important inhabitants in Jacob’s Nature Park: salamanders, pollinators, and box turtles. Kim Guinn and his staff worked from the original entrance design and estimated the cost beyond the funds remaining in the BWP grant account. It didn’t matter that BWP’s budget didn’t stretch to pay the estimated cost – a third sign was created and donated by Essyx Design & Fabrication, Inc. The three signs are found along hiking trails passing a vernal pool, in a wetlands meadow, and in the forest of Jacob’s Nature Park.
Their thoughtful creations educate the public about the importance of water quality, wetlands, and the inhabitants of the park’s wetlands meadows, Sinking Creek, and the overlooking forested ridges. Kim Guinn and his staff recognized and appreciated the inspiration and impact this environmental education park can have on our community for generations hereafter.
